2017 is the 500th anniversary of the Reformation! I know that you can hardly contain your excitement… Right?!?
I know that the term “Reformation” can a loaded term for many Christians today. For some, it is a positive term that is celebrated. We remember men such as Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli as heros of the faith, and we celebrate what happened in the church in the 16th century. For some, it is a negative term, and these same men are vilanized for the division that was created. For others, perhaps the majority of us, the term “Reformation” is a neutral term about which we know too little to form an opinion. Although we may have heard the names Martin Luther or John Calvin, we aren’t quite sure what they stood for, what they did, when they did it, or why it matters.
Regardless of who you are on this spectrum, as an evangelical you are a child of the Reformation. And regardless of who you are, I belive you will really enjoy this book.
The book is called The Unquenchable Flame; Discovering the Heart of the Reformation by Micheal Reeves.
Now, for all of you who don’t enjoy reading history text books, I assure you that this book is not at all like a text book. This book is written beautifully to be read like a novel. It is not concerned with a download of facts, dates, and figures. Instead, Reeves immerses you in the story. And through this beautifully told story, I believe Reeves opens the eyes of his reader to why the reformation matters, and where you fit in the grand narrative of the church.
For those who are already planning their “Reformation Day” celebration this October, and for those who have no idea what “Reformation Day” is, I highly recommend this book!
