“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures . . .” -1 Corinthians 15:1–4
What is the gospel?
Gospel literally means “good news.” This good news meets us where we are and radically changes us. The gospel is that Jesus willingly stepped into human history, lived a perfect life, and was arrested and sentenced to death. He was mocked, He was beaten, and He was nailed to his cross. The first and only innocent man was tortured and executed. On that cross, Jesus Christ took on himself our sin. He took on himself the wrath of the Father for our sin. He paid the debt that we owe for our sin and rebellion. In a moment, as He breathed His last breath, Jesus Christ became the substitution for you and for me.
It does not end there, because Christ was not conquered by death! Although he was buried, the tomb was not His permanent resting place. The Scriptures say that He was buried and that He was raised on the third day. He conquered death, He conquered sin, and He is alive.
He loves you. Romans 5:8 says, “but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God loves you and through the cross, He called you to a relationship with Him that is not based on what you do or how good you are, but on what He has done and how good He is. This is the gospel. This is the good news!
