Let me begin by making a confession; I am not usually a big fan of devotional books.  Now before I am shamefully shunned, I have NOTHING against them, and I know that God uses many of them to bring encouragement, conviction, and daily focus to a great number of people.  But, for me, none of these devotion books have seemed to connect.

If you are like me, I may have a resource that will really enjoy.  (Also, if you happen to be the devotional-type, I believe that you will enjoy this resource as well.) I call this book the “devotional for those who don’t like devotionals.”

“Morning and Evening” by Charles Haden Spurgeon (revised and updated by Alistair Begg) is an incredible resource for any person who wants to bring consistent time in the Scripture to their lives.

The book is simple.  For each day of the year, Spurgeon writes a short reflection of a Scripture for both the morning and evening.  This is a book that you can pick up in the midst of a busy morning routine, and again after the end of a long day before you fall asleep.  It does not take much time, and it will help create a life-giving habit of bookending your day by sitting with God’s Word.

Spurgeon’s reflections are beautifully written and thought provoking.  Most of all, each reflection is based firmly in Scripture and centered firmly on the good news of Jesus.  The thing that I appreciate most about this book is that my affection for God and His Word grows in me each time I read it.  For this reason, this book is an incredible resource that I strongly recommend.
